No. 23 Butler pulls away to rout Marquette
Feb 26, 2015 - 6:01 AM Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Kellen Dunham scored 22 points and No. 23 Butler pulled away for a 73-52 win over Marquette on Wednesday night.Kameron Woods added 14 points and Roosevelt Jones scored 10 for the Bulldogs (20-8, 10-5 Big East), who outscored the Golden Eagles 36-22 in the second half to beat them for the second time this season.
Butler entered play with losses in two of its previous three games -- to No. 6 Villanova two weeks ago and a 17-point loss to Xavier on Saturday, its largest defeat of the season in terms of points.
Marquette (11-16, 3-12) was led by 17 points from Luke Fischer and 10 each from Duane Wilson and Matt Carlino, who returned after missing the past four games with a concussion.
The Golden Eagles have lost four in a row and 10 of their last 11.
The teams have played close games in recent years, with four of the previous five meetings being decided in overtime or on a last-second shot.
Butler beat Marquette 72-68 in overtime on Jan. 31 in Milwaukee after trailing by 10 points in the final minutes of regulation.
"We really struggled offensively at their place, and they kind of man-handled us in some areas," Butler coach Chris Holtmann said, according to the team's official website. "Tonight we emphasized being a little more aggressive in attacking, and we were able to do that."
The Bulldogs began taking control in this one with around 16 minutes left when Dunham's 3-pointer kicked off a 10-2 run that stretched their lead to 11.
Butler shot just under 52 percent in the second half, making five of its seven 3s, and led by 17 on Kelan Martin's dunk with under nine minutes remaining. The lead reached 20 for the first time on Dunham's 3 with six minutes left and the Bulldogs coasted down the stretch.
Dunham had 11 points in a competitive first half. The Bulldogs were outshot 59.1 percent to 50 percent but still carried a 37-30 lead into the break.
