Vols fire Donnie Tyndall

Mar 27, 2015 - 6:39 PM Knoxville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Tennessee fired men's basketball coach Donnie Tyndall on Friday.

Athletic director Dave Hart said the decision was made after Tennessee received information regarding an NCAA investigation of Tyndall while he was the head coach at Southern Mississippi.

"It is disappointing that we have to take this action." said Hart in a statement Friday. "It is highly likely that Coach Tyndall will face significant penalties at the conclusion of the NCAA's infractions process. We believe that this decision is in the best interests of the University of Tennessee."

Tyndall was hired by Tennessee last April after a two-year stay at Southern Miss. He was 56-17 with two NIT appearances for the Golden Eagles and led the Volunteers to a record of 16-16 this past season.

The Vols will be searching for their third coach in three years, as Tyndall had taken over after Cuonzo Martin left the Tennessee job to take the vacancy at California.

Tyndall, prior to his brief run at Southern Miss, had also experienced success during a six-year stint at Morehead State (2006-12), guiding the program to the NCAA Tournament twice while compiling a 114-85 record.
