UNC extends Williams through 2020

Jun 20, 2015 - 11:25 AM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - North Carolina head men's basketball coach Roy Williams has agreed to a two-year contract extension that will run through the 2019-20 season.

Williams, who will enter his 13th season heading the Tar Heels' storied program in 2015-16, will receive a base salary between $408,169 to $595,409 over the life of the new deal as well as deferred compensation ranging from $1.5 million to $1.75 million per year. Additionally, the Hall of Fame coach can earn up to $1 million in incentives each season based on how far North Carolina advances in the NCAA Tournament and the team's Academic Progress Rate.

"I've said I want to coach another six to 10 years, so this contract takes me right to the edge of that, which is good," Williams said in a press release. "I appreciate the confidence Chancellor (Carol) Folt and (athletic director) Bubba Cunningham have in my leadership of the basketball program. They've demonstrated that with this contract extension, and with their support over the past several years, which have been a challenge for all who love Carolina as I do. I thank them on behalf of our basketball program and me personally."

Williams, 64, has amassed a 332-101 in 12 years at North Carolina, his alma mater. The Tar Heels have reached the NCAA Tournament 11 times over that span, highlighted by national championships in 2005 and 2009 and a Final Four appearance in 2008.

"The University of North Carolina is fortunate to have Roy Williams directing its basketball program and we are proud to extend his contract through the 2020 season," Cunningham said. "His results on the court over 27 years as a head coach are among the most accomplished in the history of the sport, but his love for the University of North Carolina and the way he cares for his students are truly unmatched. Roy is a man of character and integrity and I have great respect for the way he leads our basketball program."

Williams' extension comes in the midst of an ongoing battle between the UNC athletic department and the NCAA over allegations of academic fraud involving several student-athletes.

North Carolina also announced new three-year contracts for the leaders of two other highly successful programs, women's tennis coach Brian Kalbas and women's lacrosse coach Jenny Levy.
