Hoyas hold off Fresno State for first-round win

Mar 18, 2012 - 10:27 PM Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Tia Magee scored 17 points as she helped guide Georgetown to a 61-56 win over Fresno State in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament at Carmichael Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the fifth-seeded Hoyas (23-8) were Sugar Rodgers and Adria Crawford with 11 points apiece, the latter also clearing a team-best nine rebounds.

The 12th-seeded Bulldogs (28-6) were paced by Ki-Ki Moore who tallied 22 points and pulled down eight rebounds, although she also turned the ball over five times in the setback. Rosie Moult recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 boards, followed by Madison Parrish who scored all 10 of her points at the free-throw line before fouling out.

Georgetown led from the very beginning and never looked back, the team holding FSU to a mere 30.0 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including 3-of-18 behind the three-point line, in order to claim a 33-23 advantage at the break.

Late in the second half the Bulldogs closed the gap to a mere three points at 59-56 and with less than 20 seconds remaining had a chance to possibly tie the game, but they threw the ball out of bounds. The Hoyas made good on a couple of free throws down the stretch in order to secure the five-point win.

Georgetown, which will now face off against Georgia Tech in the second round, made it through despite shooting a disappointing 37.3 percent from the floor. Defensively the Hoyas held the opposition to just 7-of-29 beyond the arc and forced 19 turnovers.
