Eaton, Hamson shine as BYU upsets NC State

Mar 23, 2014 - 1:55 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lexi Eaton scored a game-high 25 points to lead the 12th-seeded BYU Cougars to a 72-57 upset victory over the fifth- seeded NC State Wolfpack in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Pauley Pavilion.

Jennifer Hamson nearly had a triple-double by posting 12 points, 19 rebounds and nine blocks for BYU (27-6), which will face off against Nebraska in the second round. Morgan Bailey tallied 13 points and 12 boards, while Kylie Maeda added 14 points.

Miah Spencer paced NC State (25-8) with 16 points, Markeisha Gatling registered 11 points and eight boards and Len'Nique Brown scored 10.

BYU shot 45.2 percent from the field in the first half on its way to a 33-26 lead at intermission. NC State shot a woeful 23.5 percent in the opening stanza but kept the game within striking distance by outscoring the Cougars from the free-throw line, 8-1.

The Wolfpack brought their deficit to five early in the second half, but BYU responded by ripping off eight straight points and held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

BYU earned the decisive win despite losing the turnover battle, 16-7.
