Texas triumphs over Penn Quakers

Mar 23, 2014 - 9:49 PM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Imani McGee-Stafford scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action as the Texas Longhorns defeated the Penn Quakers, 79-61, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Louisville Regional at the Comcast Center.

Also scoring in double figures for the fifth-seeded Longhorns (22-11) were Nekia Jones and Empress Davenport with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Alyssa Baron led all scorers with 25 points for the 12th-seeded Quakers (22-7), converting 10-of-25 shots from the floor, while Sydney Stipanovich and Courtney Wilson pitched in with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Penn appeared to have the edge in the first half, leading by as many as 15 in the period before clinging to a 38-31 lead at the break. After scoring 18 points through the first 20 minutes of action, Baron was held to only 3-of-11 shooting from the floor in the second half, Penn just 36.7 percent collectively, as Texas came storming back for the convincing win.

Texas, which logged a 44-28 advantage on the glass, shot not only 51.8 percent from the floor on the day, but also a perfect 18-of-18 at the free-throw line in order to combat 18 turnovers.

The Longhorns will be back in action on Tuesday night against regional host Maryland, after the Terps crushed Army earlier on Sunday in a 90-52 final.
