Notre Dame remains unbeaten, cruises to Sweet 16
Mar 25, 2014 - 1:51 AM Toledo, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Natalie Achonwa tallied a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish toppled the Arizona State Sun Devils, 84-67, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Savage Hall.Achonwa knocked down 8-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-12 at the free-throw line for top-seeded Notre Dame (34-0), which will take on the survivor of the Oklahoma State/Purdue matchup in the Sweet 16. Kayla McBride scored 22 points and handed out nine assists, while Jewell Loyd added 19 points and seven boards.
For ninth-seeded ASU (23-10), Deja Mann and Adrianne Thomas netted 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Sophie Brunner hauled in 10 rebounds.
The Irish carried a modest 32-26 lead into intermission after shooting 43.5 percent from the field in the first half. The Sun Devils made good on only 35.7 percent of their field goal tries in the opening 20 minutes but kept the game within striking distance by attempting five more field goals than Notre Dame.
Notre Dame pulled away in the second half with an 18-of-34 showing from the floor (.529) to go with a 14-of-20 performance at the foul line (.700). The team finished the game a stellar 25-of-32 from the charity stripe (.781).
Notre Dame has won 15 straight games by double digits and will partake in the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in the last 18 years.
