Sims powers Baylor over California

Mar 25, 2014 - 3:54 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Odyssey Sims nearly recorded a triple-double in leading the Baylor Lady Bears to a 75-56 rout of the California Golden Bears in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Ferrell Center.

Sims finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists for second-seed Baylor (31-4), which will face third-seed Kentucky in the Sweet 16. Nina Davis added 13 points, Khadijiah Cave had 10 and Niya Johnson dished out 11 assists.

Afure Jemerigbe led seventh-seed California (22-10) with 17 points. Brittany Boyd chipped in 15 points and seven assists and Gennifer Brandon had nine points and 15 rebounds.

California kept pace in the first half, sinking 41.9 percent from the floor, compared to a 42.4 percent effort from Baylor, which clung to a 34-33 lead at the break.

The Golden Bears did not have such luck in the second period, when they netted just 36 percent of their field goal tries. The Lady Bears steadily extended their lead by shooting 43.3 percent from the field and by hitting 12-of-14 at the free-throw line.

Baylor outscored California 44-28 in the paint and owned a 41-34 edge on the glass. The Lady Bears also assisted on 24 of their 27 field goals.
