LSU upsets WVU in second-round clash
Mar 26, 2014 - 4:49 AM Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Danielle Ballard tallied a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds, also dishing out a team-best six assists as the seventh-seeded LSU Lady Tigers outlasted the second-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers, 76-67, in a second-round NCAA Tournament contest at Maravich Center.Shanece McKinney netted 13 points with seven rebounds and five blocked shots for LSU (21-12), which advances to the Sweet 16 Sunday to take on Louisville. DaShawn Harden chipped in 12 points with eight rebounds, and Jasmine Rhodes came off the bench to score 11 in the win.
Asya Bussie recorded 21 points with eight boards, hitting 13-of-15 from the free-throw line for West Virginia (30-5). Bria Holmes contributed 12 points in the loss, and Christal Caldwell added 10 points.
LSU connected on 37.1 percent of its shot attempts in the first half, but missed all five 3-point tries. The Lady Tigers did hit a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line in the frame, and took a slim 37-35 lead into the intermission. West Virginia made just 34.3 percent of its field goal attempts in the half, and hit 4-of-12 from 3-point distance.
The Lady Tigers improved their shooting accuracy in the second half to an even 40 percent from the floor, while the Mountaineers headed in the other direction. WVU hit just 25 percent of its shot tries in the period, including just 1-of-10 from deep. The Mountaineers couldn't erase the slim first-half deficit, and fell behind by an additional seven points in the end.
LSU had the advantage in points in the paint, 38-24, and in rebounding, 55-40. West Virginia slightly won the battle at the free-throw line, 24-20.
