Strong second half has Huskies headed to Elite Eight

Mar 29, 2014 - 10:46 PM Lincoln, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis registered a double- double with 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Connecticut Huskies pulled off a 70-51 win over the BYU Cougars in the semifinals of the Lincoln Regional at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Breanna Stewart was responsible for 16 points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals, but she also missed all six of her 3-point tries as the top-seeded Huskies (37-0) finished the meeting a mere 3-of-19 on the perimeter. Bria Hartley chipped in 12 points and five assists, followed by Moriah Jefferson with 11 points. Stefanie Dolson came up a point shy of a double-double as she matched Mosqueda-Lewis on the glass and also logged four blocks.

The Cougars (28-7), the 12th seed in the region, were paced by Kim Beeston with 16 points and Morgan Bailey 14, while Jennifer Hamson responded with nine points, 13 rebounds and a game-high six rejections.

BYU frustrated the Huskies in the first half, holding the top team in the nation to just 35.5 percent shooting from the floor overall, including 0-of-8 behind the 3-point line, but still it was UConn with the narrow 30-29 edge at the break.

BYU, which was outscored in the paint on the day by a 36-12 margin, was held without a field goal for close to eight minutes to close out the meeting.

The Huskies entered the contest riding a 42-game win streak, dating back to last season. The most recent setback for UConn was a 61-59 decision versus Notre Dame during the Big East Tournament on March 12, 2013.

This was the third all-time meeting between the programs, with the Huskies winning the first two by an average of 47.5 points.

UConn, which has won eight national titles, will now take aim at making it to the Final Four for the seventh straight year as it squares off against the winner of the DePaul/Texas A&M matchup in the regional final on Monday.
