DePaul pulls off upset over Minnesota

Mar 21, 2015 - 2:41 AM Notre Dame, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Megan Podkowa netted 23 points and grabbed five rebounds to pace her ninth-seeded DePaul Blue Demons past the eighth-seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers, 79-72, in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Purcell Pavilion.

The Blue Demons (27-7) will move on to the second round of the tournament, where they will meet top-seeded Notre Dame Sunday.

Chanise Jenkins scored 16 points and hauled in seven rebounds for DePaul, while Brooke Schulte came off the bench to contribute 13 points. Brittany Hrynko added 10 points, six assists and four steals, but went a cold 0-of-7 from 3-point range in the win.

Amanda Zahui B. registered a huge effort, netting 21 points with 22 rebounds and five assists to pace Minnesota (23-10). Shae Kelley chipped in 17 points with eight boards and four steals, Carlie Wagner added 14 with another eight rebounds and Shayne Mullaney collected 11 points with eight assists in the loss.

Minnesota didn't help its cause in the game after suffering through 28 turnovers, which DePaul converted into 25 points. The Blue Demons missed 20 of their first 22 3-pointers, and finished the game shooting 8-of-34 from distance.
