FGCU records first-ever NCAA Tournament victory

Mar 21, 2015 - 6:31 PM Tallahassee, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kaneisha Atwater scored 26 points and Whitney Knight added a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, as the No. 7 seed Florida Gulf Coast Eagles notched a 75-67 win over the No. 10 seed Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at the Tucker Center.

The NCAA Tournament victory was the first in program history for FGCU (31-2), which extended its current win streak to 26 in a row. The Eagles move on to the second round, where they will await the winner of No. 2 seed Florida State and No. 15 seed Alabama State in the Greensboro Region Monday night with a chance to go to the Sweet Sixteen.

Roddricka Patton scored a career-high 23 points to pace the Cowgirls (20-12), while Liz Donohue scored all 14 of their points in the second half.

The Eagles knocked down six 3-pointers (.375) in the opening frame and led 36-31 at the break.

FGCU never trailed in the second stanza and eventually pulled away thanks to a 12-0 run late in regulation.

The Eagles exacted revenge from last year's 61-60 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
