Utah upsets No. 8 UCLA

Oct 5, 2014 - 7:44 AM Pasadena, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andy Phillips kicked a 29-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining to give Utah a 30-28 upset win over No. 8 UCLA on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

Utah didn't trail until late in the fourth quarter, when UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley went up top and found Eldridge Massington for a 40-yard touchdown to make it 28-27 in favor of the home team.

Devontae Booker led Utah down the field on the decisive possession, with his 15-yard run on 3rd-and-4 from the UCLA 32 setting up Phillips' kick. Booker carried a career-high 33 times for 156 yards.

Mobile QB Kendal Thompson relieved starter Travis Wilson early on and ignited Utah's offense. The transfer from Oklahoma completed 10-of-13 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown and ran for 83 yards.

Utah (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) beat an AP top-10 team on the road for just the second time in school history.

"Obviously, this is a disappointing loss," said UCLA head coach Jim Mora. "My hat is off to Utah. They played a great game and beat us."

After Phillips put the Utes in front, Hundley completed three passes for 22 yards and ran for nine yards to get the Bruins (4-1, 1-1) to the brink of kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn's range. Fairbairn missed his 55-yard kick as time expired wide right, but was given another opportunity when the refs ruled that a Utah defender ran into him. The penalty was ultimately meaningless, as Fairbairn missed the ensuing 50-yarder.

Hundley threw for 269 yards -- 93 of which came on a touchdown reception by Devin Fuller -- and two scores on 16-of-21 passing, but spent most of the contest on his back. The preseason Heisman Trophy candidate was sacked a career-high 10 times.

Utah took an early 7-0 lead when Tevin Carter intercepted Hundley and ran it back 27 yards to the end zone.

Booker carried five straight times on Utah's fourth drive of the game before Thompson lofted a pass to Dres Anderson, who made a leaping grab in double coverage and fell into the end zone.

UCLA cut into its deficit on the ensuing possession, with Paul Perkins doing the bulk of the work on the ground. He ran seven times for 67 yards and capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown.

Phillips then sent Utah into halftime with a 17-7 lead after drilling a 48- yard field goal late in the second quarter.

The Bruins manufactured a 13-play, 80-yard trek early in the third and pulled to within three points on Eddie Vanderdoes' 1-yard touchdown.

Booker restored the 10-point cushion with his 6-yard touchdown run late in the third, but a wheel route to Fuller with 12:22 left in the fourth led to the longest touchdown of the junior's career and another three-point spread.

Phillips hit another field goal midway through the final frame, this time from 45 yards away, to make it 27-21.

Utah topped UCLA on the road for the first time in program history ... Utah defensive end Nate Orchard sacked Hundley four times. Hunter Dimick had 2 1/2 sacks ... UCLA had won 11 straight games against unranked opponents.
