Sep 8, 2013 - 5:32 AM Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Taysom Hill racked up 388 yards of total offense as BYU used a dominating rushing game to take a 40-21 win over No. 15 Texas on Saturday. The Cougars (1-1) set a team record with 550 rushing yards as Hill had 259 yards on 17 carries, with three touchdowns, Jamaal Williams had 182 yards on 30 carries, and Paul Lasike added a touchdown on 15 carries and 87 yards to highlight the attack.
Hill also went 9-for-26 for 129 yards with an interception and Justin Sorensen kicked four field goals in the win.
David Ash was 19-for-34 for 251 yards and two touchdowns, but left in the fourth quarter with an injury. Johnathan Gray had 13 carries for 90 yards for the Longhorns (1-1), who were coming off a 56-7 blowout of New Mexico State last week.
The start of this game was delayed for nearly two hours due to a thunderstorm that passed through the area.
BYU began the game with the ball and went to the ground attack immediately, with runs of 12 yards by Williams, and 13 yards by Lasike setting up a 34-yard field goal from Sorensen for a 3-0 lead less than three minutes in.
Later in the first, Texas took the lead as Ash and Mike Davis got together on a 57-yard touchdown, but just over a minute later Hill ripped off a 68-yard run into the end zone for a 10-7 advantage with 2:17 left in the first.
The Longhorns' first possession of the second half bore fruit, as a nine-play, 76-yard drive was capped on a 2-yard touchdown run by Joe Bergeron for a 14-10 lead with 10 1/2 minutes left in the first half.
The Cougars, though, came right back down the field as the 10th play of the 75-yard march saw Hill take the ball into the end zone for a 17-14 lead with 7:48 to play.
After a three-and-out from Texas, BYU made it a 24-14 game thanks to a 10-yard run from Lasike. All 59 yards of the nine-play drive were gained on the ground.
Sorenson gave the team a 27-14 lead at the break as he hit a 32-yard field goal with just four seconds to play.
BYU's first possession of the second half saw the team go the distance, as Cody Hoffman's 31-yard catch helped to set up a 26-yard run into the end zone by Hill for a 34-14 lead.
Ash and Davis got together on a 23-yard score on Texas' ensuing possession, but Sorenson countered with a 36-yard field goal on the Cougars' next touch.
Sorensen added a 24-yard field goal with 1:31 to play in the third quarter for a 40-21 lead.
Texas crossed midfield early in the fourth quarter, but an Ash pass to John Harris on 4th-and-3 from the 29 fell incomplete and the team failed to convert another fourth down attempt later in the game.
