Ohio State QB Miller to miss season
Aug 19, 2014 - 10:17 PM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller will miss the entire 2014 season with a right shoulder injury, the school confirmed Tuesday. The senior quarterback and Heisman Trophy contender re-injured the shoulder while throwing a short pass during practice on Monday and will need surgery, but says his college career isn't over.
"I love Ohio State and Buckeye nation, and my goal is to come back from this injury stronger and better than ever," Miller said in a statement. "I am on course to graduate in December and I want to attend graduate school, and then return to lead the Buckeyes next season.
"In the meantime, I want to give all the support I can to my coaches and teammates as they chase a championship this season."
The dynamic quarterback racked up 2,094 yards and 24 touchdowns passing and 1,068 yards and 12 TDs rushing last season, earning the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award for a second time.
Miller ranks second in Ohio State history with 8,346 total career yards and 84 touchdowns.
"My thoughts and prayers are with Braxton and his family," Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said in a statement. "This is an unfortunate injury to a young man who means so much to this program and to Buckeye nation."
Miller, who is 26-8 as a starter, underwent surgery on the same shoulder in February and had said he was back to 100 percent before being injured Monday. The school said he was not hit on the play in question.
Redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett and third-year sophomore Cardale Jones have taken turns with the No. 1 offense when Miller wasn't on the field. Meyer said Saturday that Barrett had moved ahead of Jones as Miller's backup.
Ohio State is ranked No. 5 in the preseason Associated Press Poll.
