Ohio State, Notre Dame to meet in 2022-23

Sep 4, 2014 - 7:57 PM South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Notre Dame and Ohio State jointly announced Thursday that the two traditional college football powers will face one another in a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023.

The schools will square off in Columbus on Sept. 3, 2022 and in South Bend on Sept. 23, 2023. It will be the first regular-season meetings between the programs since 1996, when the Buckeyes posted a 29-16 road win.

Current Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was a first-year assistant under Lou Holtz at Notre Dame in that 1996 clash.

"I am excited we are able once again to bring these two programs together on the football field," Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick said. "Football games between Notre Dame and Ohio State make great sense from a strength-of-schedule standpoint. In addition, with (Ohio State AD) Gene Smith having both played and coached football at Notre Dame -- and with Urban Meyer having served as an assistant football coach at Notre Dame--there are some obvious, high-profile connections between our two institutions."

The Buckeyes and Fighting Irish did meet in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, which Ohio State prevailed by a 34-20 count.

A portion of the proceeds for the two upcoming games are expected to go to the Glenna R. Joyce Scholars program, which provides full four-year scholarships to 115 central Ohio high schools who attend either Notre Dame or Ohio State.
