Sooners cruise past Tulsa

Sep 6, 2014 - 11:38 PM Tulsa, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Trevor Knight threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners' 52-7 rout of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday.

Knight completed 21-of-34 passes for 299 yards for the Sooners (2-0), who opened the season with a 48-16 victory over Louisiana Tech. He also carried the ball five times for 35 yards.

Keith Ford rushed for 87 yards and two scores on 10 carries for Oklahoma, which racked up 580 yards of total offense. Alex Ross carried the ball five times for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Sterling Shepard caught eight passes for a career-high 177 yards and a score for Oklahoma, which lost star cornerback Zack Sanchez to a shoulder injury.

"I think it was good. Once again we started off fast and that was big for us," said Knight. "Early on we missed a couple of shots down the field that we need to connect on. But as the game went on I ended up hitting a few to Sterling down the sidelines."

Dane Evans connected on 23-of-43 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Golden Hurricane (1-1), who needed two overtimes to slip past Tulane in their opener.

Keevan Lucas caught 10 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown for Tulsa.

"They came ready to play," said Lucas. "We expected them to be big and expected them to be fast. For the most part the better team won. No credit taken away from them. We have to start faster like I said earlier, and maybe next time."

The Sooners needed just three plays to find the end zone. Shepard and Durron Neal caught passes of 54 and 20 yards, then Ford scored from seven yards out.

Oklahoma took a 14-0 lead on Knight's 31-yard TD run with 6:35 left in the first quarter. Knight hooked up with Blake Bell for a 3-yard score later in the period.

Michael Hunnicutt's 38-yard field goal early in the second stanza made it 24-0.

Tulsa finally got into a rhythm on offense, but a 13-play drive ended with a fumble. Ross followed with an 82-yard TD run for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma cruised to victory in the second half.
