Wallace, No. 15 Ole Miss rout Vandy
Sep 7, 2014 - 3:53 AM Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Bo Wallace's last four quarters have been far better than his first three.Wallace was 23-of-30 for 320 yards and a touchdown in three quarters of work as 15th-ranked Mississippi routed Vanderbilt, 41-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Wallace tossed three interceptions in the first half against Boise State last Thursday and Ole Miss (2-0, 1-0 SEC) was up just 7-6 heading into the fourth before pulling away for a 35-13 victory. Wallace fired a trio of touchdown passes on consecutive throws in that final frame, completing 6-of-7 passes for 175 yards in the fourth.
The senior picked up right where he left off on Saturday, leading the Rebels on four consecutive scoring drives to start the game as they opened up a 20-0 cushion at the break. The Rebels tallied the game's first 41 points.
"We've certainly had success throwing the ball. I couldn't tell you that it was the way we thought it would go coming in but Bo (Wallace) did a good job reading his progression," Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze said.
Evan Engram caught seven passes for 112 yards, while Cody Core hauled in four receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown for Ole Miss, which outgained the Commodores, 547-167.
Stephen Rivers, who didn't complete his first pass until the midway point of the second quarter, finished 6-of-25 for 60 yards and an interception for the Commodores (0-2, 0-1), who have been outscored 78-10 in two games.
"We're just fighting through the growing pains of being young," first-year Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason said.
Ralph Webb carried the ball 18 times for 95 yards in defeat.
Jaylen Walton's 20-yard TD sprint up the middle opened the scoring and completed an 11-play, 75-yard march. Following a Vandy punt, Wallace hit Core for gains of 20 and 27 yards, respectively, before Andrew Fletcher booted a 31-yard field goal for a 10-0 Rebels advantage late in the first.
Fletcher split the uprights from 25 yards out on the Rebels' next touch, finishing off a 15-play, 72-yard march. Wallace fired a 20-yard score to Core later in the stanza for Ole Miss' 20-0 cushion.
Cliff Coleman intercepted a Rivers pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown on the second snap of the second half.
Following a Vandy three-and-out, Wallace hit Vince Sanders for 21 yards and found Engram for back-to-back receptions of 17 and 25 yards. I'Tavius Mathers capped the 10-play, 79-yard sequence with a 2-yard TD plunge to make it 34-0 at the 9:29 mark of the third.
Ryan Buchanan came on for Wallace on the Rebels' next series and DeVante Kincade got in from two yards out on a 4th-and-1, extending the margin to 41-0 late in the third.
Tommy Openshaw's 26-yard field goal finally got the Commodores on the board early in the fourth.
