No. 10 Baylor blows out Northwestern State

Sep 7, 2014 - 7:22 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Russell completed 16-of-25 passes for 438 yards and five touchdowns in just one half as 10th-ranked Baylor routed Northwestern State, 70-6, on Saturday night.

Russell started in place of Bryce Petty, who missed the game with a back injury. Petty suffered two cracked vertebrae as he was hit while running for a touchdown in Baylor's win over SMU last Sunday.

KD Cannon caught six passes for 223 yards and three scores, Johnny Jefferson carried the ball 20 times for 107 yards and a touchdown and Silas Nacita added 104 yards and two scores on the ground for the Bears (2-0).

"We really don't like to view our guys as backups," said Baylor head coach Art Briles. "They are just all players. We have a bunch of players, but we can only play so many at a certain time. They all bring different things to the table."

Zach Adkins was 7-of-17 for 112 yards with an interception for FCS Northwestern State (0-2).

Baylor tallied the game's first 28 points and never looked back.

Russell hit Shock Linwood for a 24-yard completion before firing a 50-yard touchdown to Cannon on Baylor's opening drive.

Xavien Howard intercepted Adkins on the third play of the Demons' ensuing drive and Russell ran it in from three yards out. Following a Northwestern State punt, Russell hooked up with Cannon for a 15-yard completion before hitting him for an 81-yard score to make it 21-0 midway through the first.

Russell found Cannon for a 42-yard score in the waning seconds of the opening frame for Baylor's 28-0 cushion.

Chris Moore nailed a 25-yard field goal to get the Demons on the board early in the second before Baylor put up 21 more points to close the half.

Linwood ran for a 2-yard score, Jay Lee had a 61-yard TD catch and Davion Hall hauled in a 57-yard score for a commanding 49-3 advantage heading into the break.

Baylor cruised to the easy win in the second half.
