Indiana shocks No. 18 Missouri

Sep 21, 2014 - 1:42 AM Columbia, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Angelo Roberts scored a 3-yard touchdown in the final minute and Indiana shocked No. 18 Missouri with a 31-27 win on Saturday.

The winning score came with 22 seconds left and was set up by Tevin Coleman's 44-yard gain on a screen pass, which came one play after Missouri defensive back John Gibson was whistled for a pass interference penalty on a fourth-down incompletion.

The Tigers had just taken the lead on Andrew Baggett's 40-yard field goal at the other end.

Missouri got an extra untimed down at the end of the game after Indiana was called for roughing quarterback Maty Mauk, but Marcus Murphy was tackled at the end of a 16-yard gain at the Indiana 32.

The Hoosiers (2-1) bounced back from a 45-42 loss at Bowling Green last week to avoid what would have been their worst start in three years.

"We made good plays at the end. Good win, good team," said Indiana coach Kevin Wilson. "Our team's got a lot to grow and gain on it. It's nice to finally play hard and get on the right side."

The loss sends the Tigers (3-1) reeling into Southeastern Conference play next week against South Carolina. They entered the game coming off three easy wins, beating South Dakota State, Toledo and UCF by an average of 24.3 points.

"Any time there's a game that close you can go back and find a lot of little things that could have been different," said Missouri coach Gary Pinkel. "Ultimately, it plays out the way it does. Like any game, win or lose, we'll go back and evaluate what we've done and where we need to improve and things we can correct. That's what we'll work hard to do starting tomorrow morning."

Mauk, who had 12 touchdown passes in the first three games, threw for 326 yards with a 1-yard touchdown strike to tight end Sean Culkin that tied the score early in the fourth quarter.

Jimmy Hunt had 45-yard touchdown catch in the loss, Bud Sasser led all players with 11 receptions for 142 yards and Russell Hansbrough added 119 yards on the ground with a 68-yard touchdown run, though he only gained seven yards after halftime.

The Hoosiers' loss to Bowling Green last week looked even worse Saturday when Big Ten rival Wisconsin rushed for a school-record 644 yards in a 68-17 rout of the Falcons.

But they hung with Missouri all game. Nate Sudfeld passed for 252 yards with a 33-yard touchdown throw to J-Shun Harris II and Coleman ran for 132 yards on 19 carries.

Coleman broke two tackles on his key screen pass near the end of the game and Tigers safety Braylon Webb was whistled for the facemask. Roberts leapt into the end zone from the 3-yard line for the winning score, his second touchdown of the game.

"From our standpoint, it's not a surprise that we won, but it was a big upset in reality," said Hoosiers linebacker Tegray Scales. "I think we're very excited to know we could do that."

Indiana had taken a 24-17 lead with consecutive big plays near the end of the third quarter -- Coleman's 49-yard run and Sudfeld's 33-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Harris over the middle of the field with 54 seconds left.

But Mauk led Missouri back downfield and found Culkin in the front right side of the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown pass that tied it.

The Tigers played without injured standout defensive end Markus Golden.

"He's a leader. He's one of the best defensive ends in the country," said Tigers linebacker Michael Scherer. "Not to say the kids that stepped in today didn't do a great job because they did. It's tough to lose a guy like that."

Indiana scored touchdowns in the first and second quarters on 1-yard runs by Coleman and Roberts.

But Missouri responded both times with big-play scores -- first when Mauk hit Jimmie Hunt for an over-the-shoulder catch behind two defenders on a 45-yard score, and then on Hansbrough's 68-yard touchdown run down the left sideline.

Baggett kicked a 27-yard field goal for Missouri and Aaron Del Grosso ended the half with a 23-yarder for the Hoosiers to make it 17-17.

Mauk was intercepted by safety Mark Murphy on the first play of the second half, but Del Grosso missed a 41-yard field goal try for the Hoosiers. The Tigers used 290-pound defensive lineman Harold Brantley to pick up a first down on a fake punt, but wasted the appealing play by not registering another first down.

Missouri beat Indiana 45-28 in Bloomington last year to start a home-and-home ... The Hoosiers will play their first Big Ten game of the season next week against Maryland.
