Baylor nips TCU on last-second FG in high-scoring contest

Oct 12, 2014 - 4:11 AM Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Callahan made a 28-yard field goal on the final play of the contest to send No. 5 Baylor past No. 9 TCU, 61-58, in a clash of high-octane Big 12 rivals on Saturday.

Trailing 58-37 in the fourth quarter, Baylor came all the way back as Devin Chafin posted a 7-yard TD run, Bryce Petty threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Antwan Goodley, Corey Coleman hauled in a 25-yard pass and a defensive stop near midfield helped set up Callahan's winning boot.

Petty ended up throwing for 510 yards and six touchdowns on 28-of-55 passing for the Bears (6-0, 3-0 Big 12). Goodley and Coleman each posted a pair of TD receptions, while K.D. Cannon and Jay Lee also reached the end zone once through the air.

"These are wins that you think about and dream about, but they very seldom happen," said Baylor head coach Art Briles. "We had one back in 2011 at Kansas, we were down 21 points on the road with 11 minutes left in the game. I am not sure if we win this one on the road. Our guys deserved it. They showed a lot of character and toughness."

Baylor's Shock Linwood led all players with 178 yards rushing on 29 attempts and Chafin finished with 43 yards on 10 carries.

Trevone Boykin completed just 21 of his 47 attempts for 287 yards and one score for the Horned Frogs (4-1, 1-1). He added 45 yards on 18 carries.

B.J. Catalon contributed 71 yards on two receptions, 48 rushing yards and two TDs on 13 totes and a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown in defeat. Aaron Green also scored on a rush for TCU.

Kolby Listenbee racked up 146 yards and a touchdown on just four grabs for the Horned Frogs and Marcus Mallett returned a Petty pick for another touchdown.

In a game tied at 58-58, TCU had one last chance to move the ball in regulation but failed on a 4th-and-3 just past midfield. It was originally 4th-and-8, but an illegal substitution penalty on Baylor during a punt prompted the visitors to go for it. However, Boykin's pass to Josh Doctson fell incomplete.

Baylor then went eight plays to move deep into TCU territory, aided by a pass interference call on 3rd-and-10 which gave the Bears possession at the TCU 28. Linwood gained 17 yards on the next three plays before Callahan completed the comeback.

"I have to say defensively, that's not a very good day.We didn't finish to the end. It comes down to five or six plays -- five verticals and a snap over the head. Those three points could have made a difference," stated TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "We could have been ahead three points. But you have to play better defense and that's what I told them in there. When you play somebody at home, you have to drive the spike, and we didn't."

Listenbee outleapt a defender in the end zone and came down with the ball for a 35-yard TD strike on TCU's first touch.

Linwood fumbled shortly into Baylor's ensuing drive and Mike Tuaua recovered for TCU at his team's 34. Catalon rumbled in from the three on the Frogs' next possession to make it 14-0.

Baylor got untracked three series later, as Petty aired it out and found Goodley for a 66-yard strike, and the Bears got within 14-10 shortly thereafter on a 22-yard boot from Callahan.

Catalon's 9-yard scamper put TCU up by 11 less than five minutes into the second quarter, but Baylor responded on a 29-yard connection from Petty to Coleman.

TCU's Jaden Oberkrom booted a 39-yard field goal with 2:44 left in the half, but the hosts tied things four plays later when Petty found Cannon on the right side for a 67-yard score and 24-24 tie.

Catalon deflated the home crowd seconds later by returning the kickoff 94 yards to put the Frogs back on top. Callahan then ended the half with a successful 29-yard attempt to get Baylor within 31-27.

Petty was picked off by Kevin White early in the third, and Oberkrom's 20-yard make to end TCU's ensuing possession was countered by a 20-yarder from Callahan.

The Frogs went up 41-30 on a 2-yard run from Trevorris Johnson immediately after a 41-yard scamper from Green, in which he coughed up the ball and was lucky to have Doctson recover.

Oberkrom was later good from 37 yards away and the third quarter ended with Baylor behind 44-37, thanks to another deep ball from Petty to Lee for a 47- yard TD offering.

Green ran in from six yards out in the first minute of the fourth and the visitors led 51-37. Eight plays later, Petty was picked off by Mallet, who ran 49 yards to give TCU what seemed like an iron-clad 58-37 edge with 11:38 to play.

Baylor refused to quit, though, and a 7-yard run by Chafin with 10:39 to go made it a two-score contest once again. Goodley then hauled in a pass from Petty from 28 yards away with 6:39 on the clock to pull the hosts within 58-51.

The game was tied after Coleman made an over-the-shoulder grab for a 25-yard touchdown with 4:42 on the clock.

Game Notes

This was the highest-scoring contest between two teams in the top 10 in FBS history ... The schools combined for 1,267 yards of total offense, 782 of those by Baylor ... Goodley totaled 158 receiving yards and Coleman chipped in 144, while Cannon ended up with 124 ... Doctson wound up with 60 yards on five catches.
