TCU hangs 82 on Texas Tech

Oct 26, 2014 - 4:57 AM Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Trevone Boykin threw a school-record seven touchdown passes and the 10th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs scored the most points in school history in an 82-27 rout of the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday.

Boykin completed 22-of-39 passes for a career-high 433 yards for the Horned Frogs (6-1, 3-1 Big 12), who racked up 785 yards of total offense.

Deante' Gray caught four passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns for TCU, which has won two in a row. Josh Doctson hauled in four passes for 76 yards and two scores before leaving with a right ankle injury.

Trevorris Johnson rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, while Aaron Green carried the ball six times for 105 yards and a score.

"I'm keeping my nose down. I know we have a good football team," said TCU coach Gary Patterson. "I understand the level of play that they can play. I've seen them do it, now we have to be able to do that. Next we have a very good West Virginia team that we have to play at their place. They play very well there. We have to get ready."

Davis Webb connected on 15-of-30 passes for 300 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Red Raiders (3-5, 1-4), who failed to build off last week's win over Kansas. Webb left in the third quarter with a left ankle injury.

Texas Tech leading receiver Jakeem Grant played despite being injured in a shooting in Lubbock last Sunday morning. He caught two passes for 70 yards Saturday before exiting with a left ankle injury.

"We've got to give them credit. They were a very good team," said Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury. "Even if we were to play our best, it would have been tough to beat them. You've just got to keep fighting. We've got to keep going, keep trying to be better and try to improve this week."

Both offenses got off to a fast start. Webb hooked up with Kenny Williams for a 57-yard score on the fourth play of the game, and Green responded with a 62- yard TD run.

After Texas Tech kicker Ryan Bustin made a 28-yard field goal, TCU ripped off 17 straight points. Doctson ignited the surge with a 51-yard score. The Horned Frogs' defense followed with a goal-line stand, and Jaden Oberkrom made a 45- yard field goal. Doctson added a 5-yard TD catch after Chris Hackett picked off Webb.

Devin Lauderdale capped the high-scoring first quarter with a 56-yard TD grab. The score got the Red Raiders within 24-17.

The ensuing TCU drive was kept alive on a defensive pass interference penalty. On 4th-and-7 from the Texas Tech 38-yard line, punter Ethan Perry's pass fell incomplete, but the defensive penalty led to Gray's 24-yard TD catch.

Bustin's 38-yard field goal cut the gap to 31-20, but the momentum completely shifted in favor of TCU following a pair of Webb fumbles. Oberkrom made field goals of 43 and 47 yards to make it a 37-20 game at the half.

Oberkrom added a 27-yard field goal to start the second half. On the ensuing kickoff, TCU's Sammy Douglas recovered the ball that bounced in front of Tyler Scalzi at the 20-yard line. Cliff Murphy's first-career touchdown reception made it a 47-20 contest.

Gray's great catch-and-run resulted in a 92-yard score with 9:41 left in the third stanza. Ty Slanina joined the party with a 57-yard TD catch on the next TCU possession.

Dylan Cantrell stopped the bleeding temporarily with a 3-yard TD catch, but Emanuel Porter's 12-yard score made it 68-27.

Johnson scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Game Notes

Despite the loss, Texas Tech leads the all-time series with TCU, 30-24-3 ... DeAndre Washington carried the ball 13 times for 77 yards for the Red Raiders, who racked up 446 yards of total offense.
