Skowron boots No. 17 Arizona past Washington
Nov 16, 2014 - 8:03 AM Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey Skowron hit two field goals in the fourth quarter, including a 47-yard attempt as time expired to give No. 17 Arizona a 27-26 victory over Washington on Saturday.Nick Wilson totaled 104 yards rushing and scored twice on 30 attempts for the Wildcats (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12), who have won two in a row since a loss at UCLA. It took the edge off a subpar performance from Anu Solomon, who completed only 17 of his 39 passes for 242 yards and two interceptions.
Samajie Grant totaled 85 yards on four catches for Arizona, which also got an 18-yard touchdown on a fake field goal by Skowron.
"I'm just proud of our guys for playing 60 minutes," Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez said. "We talk a lot about not being average because we want our guys to feel special and elite. As a football player or football program, your status is based on wins."
Cyler Miles passed for 223 yards on 20-of-29 attempts for the Huskies (6-5, 2-5), who skidded to their fourth loss in five.
Dwayne Washington led the way with 148 yards and a pair of scores on 19 totes, while Joshua Perkins caught a TD pass from Marvin Hall in defeat.
"We played how the game is supposed to be played," Washington coach Chris Peterson said. "You go out there and play hard."
Skowron converted from 35 yards out and the Wildcats got within 26-24 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, but a potential go-ahead scoring drive was cut short when Sidney Jones intercepted Solomon on the goal line.
On Washington's ensuing series, Tra'Mayne Bondurant forced a fumble by Deontae Cooper and Derrick Turituri recovered at the Huskies' 45-yard line with 1:33 on the clock. A potential 34-yard touchdown catch by Cayleb Jones on 1st- and-10 was overturned by replay, then two more rushes set up Skowron's winning boot.
After Cameron Van Winkle missed a 43-yard field goal attempt on the Huskies' second drive of the game, the hosts set up on their own 26. Five plays later, Wilson's 2-yard run to paydirt gave Arizona the early lead.
Washington responded one series later, with Hall finding Perkins for a 36-yard strike on a flea flicker.
Van Winkle made good on his next chance, hitting a 39-yarder for a 10-7 game 5 1/2 minutes into the second quarter, and Washington's 66-yard run on the Huskies' following series boosted their lead to 10.
Skowron lined up for a field goal on 4th-and-4 from the Washington 18, but ended up taking it in himself on the Wildcats' next touch and Wilson punched it in from the eight to give the hosts a 21-17 edge after Miles was sacked, fumbled and Arizona gained possession at the Huskies' 19.
A 31-yard make from Van Winkle pulled the visitors within a point before five minutes elapsed in the third, then Jones picked off Solomon and his return plus a personal foul gave the Huskies the ball on their own 26.
Washington capped that drive with a 1-yard plunge, but a botched snap on the extra point left it 26-21.
