Wolford out at Youngstown State

Nov 25, 2014 - 10:03 PM Youngstown, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Wolford has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Youngstown State football program.

Wolford, a Youngstown native, compiled a 31-26 record in five seasons guiding the Penguins but struggled down the stretch each of the last two seasons, finishing 2-6 in November the past two years. YSU missed the playoffs both seasons.

"I understand what the expectations are here at YSU, and I spent every moment in my tenure working to get the program back on solid ground," Wolford said.

Prior to being named head coach in 2010, Wolford was an assistant coach for a number of FBS level programs, including Illinois, Arizona and Kansas State. He also worked under Steve Spurrier as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator at South Carolina.

"I would like to thank Coach Wolford for the passion and energy he brought to the head football coaching position at YSU," said director of intercollegiate athletics Ron Strollo. "He never wavered in trying to build a program that our community could be proud of and was committed to do it the right way."

A national search for the next head coach will begin immediately.
