2016 FCS vs. FBS: Southern Conference

May 20, 2016 - 3:38 PM (STATS) - Cinderella is allowed out more often than in the month of March. During college football season, FCS programs are adept at drawing national attention as they seek upsets of the larger FBS.

Many of the games are played during the first few weekends of the season. This year, there are 113 FCS vs. FBS matchups, and the FCS hopes to raise their nine combined wins from last season.

Southern Conference teams will be involved in nine of the matchups:

The Matchups - Chattanooga: Alabama (Nov. 19); The Citadel: North Carolina (Nov. 19); Furman: Michigan State (Sept. 3); Mercer: Georgia Tech (Sept. 10); Samford: Mississippi State (Oct. 29); VMI: Akron (Sept. 3); Western Carolina: East Carolina (Sept. 3) and South Carolina (Nov. 19); Wofford: Ole Miss (Sept. 10).

Glamour Game - Chattanooga at Alabama. Dreams of upsetting the 2015 FBS national champion? Well, the Mocs are down 12-0 in the series, losing 49-0 in the most recent meeting in 2013.

Upset Alert - The Citadel at North Carolina. The Bulldogs already beat the South (Carolina), how about the North? Their triple-option offense is usually trouble for an out-of-conference opponent, as South Carolina learned in the Bulldogs' 23-22 upset last November.

Notable - The SoCon always saves a handful of the FBS matchups for the end of the regular season, including three this year … Only East Tennessee State, back in the SoCon after returning to football as an independent last year, is not playing an FBS opponent … With a trip to Michigan State, Furman is playing a Big Ten team for the first time. It also is the Paladins' first regular-season game on a Friday since facing George Washington on Oct. 2, 1964 … Mercer's fourth-year startup program is facing its first FBS opponent in Georgia Tech … VMI (31 straight losses) and Western Carolina (51) are trying to end long futility streaks against FBS opponents.
