Vikings beat Bucs in overtime
Oct 26, 2014 - 11:24 PM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Barr returned a fumble 27 yards for a touchdown in overtime to lift the Minnesota Vikings over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 19-13, on Sunday. After his team blew a 10-0 lead in the fourth quarter, Vikings kicker Blair Walsh made a 38-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to tie the game at 13.
On the first play of overtime, Austin Seferian-Jenkins fumbled the ball and Barr raced 27 yards the other way for the game-winning score.
"It's really unfortunate because we were playing really hard and we were doing a great job," said Seferian-Jenkins. "It's unfortunate I fumbled the ball. I have to have better ball security."
Teddy Bridgewater completed 24-of-42 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (3-5), who snapped a three-game skid.
Jerick McKinnon carried the ball 16 times for 83 yards and Cordarrelle Patterson caught six passes for 86 yards.
Mike Glennon connected on 19-of-28 passes for 171 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Bucs (1-6), who have lost three in a row.
Former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier, now the defensive coordinator for the Bucs, faced his former team. Frazier was with the Vikings from 2007-13 and spent the last three-plus season as their head coach.
Patrick Murray got the Bucs on the board with 14:12 to play when he made a 54- yard field goal, trimming Minnesota's lead to 10-3.
After forcing the Vikings to punt, Tampa Bay started from its own 20-yard line and Murray kicked a 34-yard field goal with 7:19 to go.
The Bucs defense followed with another big stop. Tampa Bay's offense then went on a 71-yard drive. Mike Evans' 23-yard catch and a defensive pass interference penalty moved the ball to the Minnesota 17-yard line. Mike James picked up a 4th-and-1 before Seferian-Jenkins' 7-yard TD catch with 2:02 remaining.
But Bridgewater was able to move the Vikings into field goal range and Walsh made a 28-yarder goal to send the game into overtime.
"During the week, the practices, we were humming pretty good defensively," said Vikings coach Mike Zimmer. "I said: 'If we can continue to do these things, then we have a chance to be a good defensive football team.' We're definitely not there yet, we've got a long way to go, but I think we've made pretty good strides since the beginning of the season."
Glennon was picked off by Captain Munnerlyn on the game's opening possession. The Vikings, however, failed to capitalize as Walsh missed a 56-yard field goal attempt.
The remainder of the first half was a punt party. Bridgewater, though, was able to rally the Vikings just before the half, hitting Chase Ford twice and Patterson once to move the team into position for a 46-yard Walsh field goal.
The first touchdown of the game came with 7:09 left in the third quarter. McKinnon carried the ball four straight times before Bridgewater hooked up with Greg Jennings for a 17-yard score.
