SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Jacob Hester scored from one yard out and Billy Volek found Malcolm Floyd for the two-point conversion with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter as the San Diego Chargers rallied for an 18-17 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday.
As is his tradition, All-Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson did not see any action, nor did injured tight end Antonio Gates. San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers did see extensive action, playing late into the third quarter and completing 11-of-21 passes for 143 yards.
His counterpart, Matt Hasselbeck, did not even make the trip to San Diego due to a bad back, although he is expected to be ready to start the season. His understudy, Charlie Frye, made the most of his opportunity, completing 19-of-30 for 219 yards and two scores.
Frye got the Seahawks on the board early, connecting on a 68 yard touchdown toss to Nate Burleson on the game's third play. It was Burleson's only catch of the night.
The Chargers answered midway through the second quarter when Darren Sproles scored from the one yard line to cap a nine-play, 87-yard drive. He ended the night with 102 yards on only 13 carries and staked a real claim as Tomlinson's back-up - a role previous filled by current Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner.
Seattle's running back by committee, Maurice Morris and newly acquired Julius Jones, combined for only 61 yards on 13 carries.
