Panthers QB Newton has ankle surgery

Mar 19, 2014 - 11:19 PM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had successful ankle surgery Wednesday to address soreness that has existed since the end of last season.

The surgery was performed by Panthers team physician Robert Anderson and will require a recovery of approximately four months, which coincides with the start of training camp.

"Dr. Anderson did not find anything unexpected in the procedure and the surgery went well," said Panthers head trainer Ryan Vermillion.

According to a report Tuesday by the Charlotte Observer, the procedure tightened ankle ligaments that had been stretched out.

Newton, 24, threw for 3,379 yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 16 games last season. He also carried the ball 111 times for 585 yards and six scores for the NFC South-champion Panthers.
