Panthers ink WR Avant
Apr 7, 2014 - 10:50 PM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Panthers signed wide receiver Jason Avant to a one-year contract on Monday.Avant had spent his entire eight-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles after being drafted by the team in 2006. He played in all 16 games (13 starts) last season, compiling 447 yards and two touchdowns on 38 receptions.
The Eagles released the 30-year-old on March 4. For his career, the Michigan product has caught 297 passes for 3,646 yards and 12 touchdowns.
"We're happy to have Jason," Carolina head coach Ron Rivera remarked. "He provides a versatile player at receiver and brings good size as well as experience to the position."
Avant joins Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood as offseason acquisitions to Carolina's revamped receiving corps. The team released Steve Smith, its franchise leader in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns on March 13.
