Jets reach agreement TE Amaro
May 16, 2014 - 7:46 PM Florham Park, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Jets agreed to terms with second round draft pick Jace Amaro and fourth-rounder Jalen Saunders on Friday.Amaro, a tight end out of Texas Tech, went to the Jets after a historic junior campaign. The 6-foot-5 San Antonio native caught 106 passes for a record 1,352 receiving yards last season, breaking the all-time FBS mark for yards by a tight end set in 2008 by Rice's James Casey (1,329).
"On the visit I felt like I really fit in there," said Amaro. "I honestly thought I was going to get picked in the first round by them. ... The place where I wanted to play was in New York and to be a Jet, and I'm just glad it happened in the second round and it's something that I'm very fortunate for."
Saunders was the first of three wide receivers selected by New York on day 3. He caught 203 passes for 3,085 yards and 26 touchdowns in four collegiate seasons -- two with Fresno State and two with Oklahoma.
"This is one tough little guy," praised Jets head coach Rex Ryan. "He gets after it."
Saunders, who returned three punts for touchdowns at Oklahoma, is expected to contribute on special teams as well as at receiver.
