Panthers QB Newton on track to start

Sep 12, 2014 - 6:43 PM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is on track to start Sunday's home opener after missing the first game of the season with a fractured rib.

Newton was a full participant in practice all week and has said he would "absolutely" be ready to go against the Detroit Lions.

The dynamic quarterback was inactive for the first time in his career last Sunday because of the injury he suffered in the preseason. Derek Anderson started in his place and led the Panthers to a 20-14 win over Tampa Bay.

The Panthers listed Newton as probable on Friday's injury report.

Running back DeAngelo Williams is questionable to play Sunday after missing the last two days of practice with a thigh injury. Linebacker Jason Williams (thigh) and tackle Garry Williams (hip) are also questionable.
