Tannehill delivers as Miami routs Oakland in London

Sep 29, 2014 - 1:38 AM London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - If Ryan Tannehill's status as Miami's quarterback was questioned this week, he came up with some answers for head coach Joe Philbin as the Dolphins rolled to a 38-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Philbin wouldn't officially commit to Tannehill as the team's starter during the week, as the Dolphins (2-2) followed up a stirring season-opening win against New England with subpar efforts in losses to Buffalo and Kansas City.

Tannehill's performance on Sunday should quiet any rumors of backup Matt Moore taking over. Miami's first-round pick in 2012 completed 14 straight passes at one point Sunday, finishing the contest 23-of-31 for 278 yards with a pair of touchdowns and an interception on a deflected pass.

"I envision myself as a good player," said Tannehill. "I knew I wasn't playing up to those standards in the first three weeks, so I wanted to come out and personally play better and my teammates need that from me. They expected me to play better and to finally be able to come out and do that, it felt good."

Lamar Miller ran for 64 yards with two touchdowns and the Miami defense was brilliant after allowing a touchdown on Oakland's first series. The Dolphins picked off three passes and returned a fumble for a score.

Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr completed 16-of-25 passes for 146 yards with a touchdown and an interception before exiting the contest in the third quarter with a knee injury.

Matt McGloin took over and threw for 129 yards with a touchdown and two picks as the Raiders (0-4) suffered their 10th straight defeat dating back to last year.

"We obviously thought we'd play better than we did today, but we didn't," Oakland head coach Dennis Allen said.

Oakland is winless after four games for the first time since an 0-5 start in 2006, and head coach Dennis Allen's job security will likely be a topic of discussion in the Bay Area on the team's upcoming bye week.

The Raiders took the opening kickoff and marched 74 yards on 10 plays for the game's first touchdown, as Carr capped it with a 3-yard TD strike to Brian Leonhardt.

It was all Miami from there.

Caleb Sturgis kicked a 41-yard field goal to finish the first Dolphins series and Tannehill ended the second with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace early in the second quarter to put Miami ahead for good.

Miller scored on a 9-yard run on a fourth-down play to cap the next Dolphins possession and Tannehill threw an 18-yard scoring pass to tight end Dion Sims to increase the Miami cushion to 24-7 heading to the intermission. The only time the Dolphins didn't score in the first half was when Tannehill took a knee on the final play.

The Dolphins were headed toward another score to start the second half, but Miller fumbled into the end zone for a touchback. The Raiders gave the ball right back when Carr was picked off by Brent Grimes just three plays later.

Miami's first interception of the season set up Miller's second touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run just two plays after Grimes' 32-yard return. The Miami defense then added to the lead a few minutes later when Cortland Finnegan returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-7.

McGloin, who entered the contest after Carr was hurt just before the Finnegan return, was intercepted by Jimmy Wilson on the next series, but Tannehill had a pass deflected and picked off by T.J. Carrie soon after.

The Dolphins didn't punt until 12 minutes remained in the contest and McGloin followed with a 90-yard drive that ended in a 22-yard TD pass to Andre Holmes, accounting for the final margin.

"After the first score we gave up, our team settled in and played well," said Philbin. "We played well today, but I'm sure there are a lot of things we can do better."

Game Notes

The Raiders haven't won a game since Week 11 of last season, a 28-23 triumph over Houston last Nov. 17 ... Maurice Jones-Drew returned to the lineup for the Raiders after missing two games with a hand injury and had just two carries for one yard ... Miami rushed for 157 yards to Oakland's 53 ... The Dolphins also played in the first NFL regular-season contest at Wembley, a 13-10 loss to the New York Giants in 2007 ... The Dolphins have beaten the Raiders five straight times ... Miami lost offensive tackle Branden Albert to a shoulder injury and center Samson Satele left with a leg injury.
