Panthers cut DB Godfrey

Oct 21, 2014 - 8:30 PM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Panthers have parted ways with defensive back Charles Godfrey, releasing the former starting safety on Tuesday.

A third-round pick of the Panthers in 2008, Godfrey opened 72 games over his first five seasons with the team, then started the initial two contests of the 2013 campaign before tearing his right Achilles and missing the remainder of the season.

Godfrey had mostly been limited to sub-packages this season, recording 19 tackles over seven games (one start).

Over 82 overall games with the Panthers, Godfrey produced 11 interceptions, 33 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and 372 total tackles.

Godfrey was let go in order for Carolina to bring back veteran guard Chris Scott, whom the club signed off the practice squad.

Scott started eight games for the Panthers last season but was released by the team during this year's final preseason cuts.
