Bills blow past mistake-prone Jets

Oct 26, 2014 - 11:53 PM East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Orton threw four touchdown passes and the Buffalo Bills cruised past the turnover-prone New York Jets, 43-23, on Sunday.

Orton completed 10-of-17 passes for 238 yards for the Bills (5-3), who forced six turnovers. Sammy Watkins caught three passes for 157 yards and a score.

Anthony Dixon carried the ball 22 times for 44 yards for Buffalo, which lost starters C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson to injuries last week.

Geno Smith found himself on the bench after throwing three interceptions in the first quarter for the Jets (1-7). Smith completed just 2-of-8 passes before being benched for Michael Vick, who connected on 18-of-36 passes for 153 yards and an interception. Vick also lost two fumbles.

Jets coach Rex Ryan has no idea who will start next week at quarterback.

"I have no idea. We'll look at that later," Ryan said after the game.

Percy Harvin caught three passes for 22 yards and carried the ball four times for 28 yards in his Jets debut. Harvin was traded to New York from Seattle on Oct. 17 for a conditional draft pick.

It was an ugly first quarter for the Smith and the Jets. After New York went three-and-out on the game's opening possession, Buffalo needed just seven plays to find the end zone. Robert Woods made a 25-yard catch before his 22- yard score made it 7-0.

Smith threw interceptions on New York's next three drives. His first pick came when he tried a deep ball to Harvin, who fell on the play. Stephon Gilmore came down with the ball but the Bills followed with a three-and-out.

Buffalo's offense faltered again after Preston Brown picked off Smith. Just two plays into the next Jets' possession, Smith was intercepted by Aaron Williams. Williams returned the ball 26 yards to the New York 1.

The Bills took advantage this time around. Lee Smith's TD catch came with 4:36 left in the first quarter.

Vick took over under center and led the Jets on a 13-play, 76-yard scoring drive. Chris Ivory capped the march with a 2-yard TD run early in the second stanza.

But the Bills responded with a quick score. Watkins' premature celebration resulted in an 84-yard catch instead of a touchdown. Buffalo picked up Watkins when Frank Summers dove into the end zone from two yards out to make it 21-7 with 11:50 left.

"I thought I was by myself and the guy ran me down and caught me," Watkins said. "I was shocked."

Dan Carpenter added a 53-yard field goal following a fumble by Vick.

New York fired back with an 11-play, 74-yard drive that Ivory capped with a 2- yard TD run. The score got the Jets within 24-14 with 1:50 remaining. Nick Folk added a 55-yard field goal as the first half expired.

After each team punted to start the second half, the Bills started from the New York 27-yard line due to Leodis McKelvin's 24-yard punt return. Carpenter made a 36-yard field goal to put Buffalo up 27-17.

After Vick fumbled at his own 10-yard line, Carpenter made a 29-yard field goal with 1:11 left in the third.

Another mistake by Vick led to more points for the Bills. Following Da'Norris Searcy's interception of Vick, Scott Chandler caught a 12-yard TD pass.

Watkins' 61-yard TD catch and Bilal Powell's 3-yard score accounted for the final margin.

The Bills were without wide receivers Marcus Easley and Marquise Goodwin ... Ivory carried the ball 13 times for 43 yards ... New York plays at Kansas City next week, while the Bills have a bye.
