Spiller signs with Saints

Mar 13, 2015 - 7:35 PM Metairie, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New Orleans Saints are the latest team to participate in this offseason's running back carousel, agreeing to terms with former Buffalo Bill C.J. Spiller on a four-year contract.

One of the more versatile backs on this year's free agent market, Spiller averaged five yards per carry during his five-year tenure in Buffalo and has been a dangerous return man as well, having averaged 30.6 yards on 10 kickoff runbacks last season and having taken two for touchdowns during his career.

Spiller also has caught 158 passes totaling 1,195 yards and six touchdowns over 70 NFL games. The 2010 first-round pick joins holdover Mark Ingram in a talented New Orleans backfield, likely in the role Darren Sproles previously excelled in during his time with the Saints.

The 27-year-old is coming off a disappointing 2014 campaign, in which Spiller was limited to just nine games by a broken collarbone and averaged a career- low 3.8 yards on 78 rushes. He had an outstanding season with the Bills in 2012, however, rushing for 1,244 yards and six touchdowns and adding 459 yards and two more scores on 43 receptions.

Spiller was all but certain not to be re-signed by the Bills after the team acquired 2013 rushing champion LeSean McCoy in a trade with Philadelphia last week.

New Orleans also announced Friday that the team has waived defensive back Corey White, a nine-game starter for the Saints in 2014.

White recorded 53 tackles, two interceptions and six passes defensed last season, but was deemed expendable when New Orleans signed veteran cornerback Brandon Browner on Thursday.
