Former NFL kicker Garo Yepremian dies at 70

May 16, 2015 - 7:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Garo Yepremian, who won two Super Bowls as a kicker for the Miami Dolphins and played parts of 14 seasons in the NFL, has died at the age of 70.

Yepremian died Friday of cancer at a hospital in Media, Pennsylvania, his wife told The Associated Press. He was diagnosed with the disease last May, Maritza Yepremian told the AP.

A native of Cyprus, Yepremian won Super Bowls with the Dolphins in the 1972 and 1973 seasons and was named to two Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams in a career that spanned from 1966 to 1981.

The 1972 Dolphins are famous for being the last NFL team to complete an undefeated season, going 17-0.

Yepremian is perhaps best remembered for his blunder in the Super Bowl against Washington that season, when his field goal was blocked and he fumbled the ball after picking it up and attempting to throw a pass. Mike Bass returned the fumble 49 yards for a touchdown that cut Miami's lead to 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

Yepremian also kicked for Detroit, New Orleans and Tampa Bay and made 210 of his 313 field goal attempts in 177 games, including 127 with the Dolphins.

A viewing for Yepremian is planned Wednesday in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, according to the AP.
