LOS ANGELES (AP) - With Boston out, Los Angeles appears on the verge of stepping in as the U.S. candidate for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal to authorize Mayor Eric Garcetti to execute agreements related to the Olympic bid.

If approved, the U.S. Olympic Committee is expected to announce LA is the candidate.

Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary are already in the mix.

The USOC cut ties with Boston in July.

The International Olympic Committee will pick the host city in 2017.

Many financial details of the Los Angeles plan remain vague.

City analysts warn developing an Olympic Village could significantly exceed the projected $1 billion cost.

TOKYO (AP) - Tokyo Olympic organizers are expected to scrap the logo for the 2020 Games following another allegation its Japanese designer might have used copied materials in presentations of the design.

Organizers have supported designer Kenjiro Sano against allegations of plagiarizing the design, but Japan's national broadcaster NHK said Tuesday that the support will be withdrawn as a result of new accusations that Sano allegedly used an image from someone else's website without authorization.

There was no immediate comment from Olympic officials on reports that the logo will be withdrawn.

Sano has faced allegations of plagiarism since the logo's July debut. A Belgian designer sued the International Olympic Committee over similarity of his logo for a theater. Sano denied the allegation, but has faced other plagiarism questions over his past designs.

FOOTBALL

Last-minute settlement talks between lawyers for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady have failed, leaving a judge to decide the fate of ''Deflategate.''

Federal Judge Richard Berman announced at a conference in Manhattan on Monday that both sides tried hard to reach a deal during the morning but failed.

He says he expects to rule as early as Tuesday whether Brady must serve a four-game suspension to start the season for his role in using underinflated footballs during the playoffs last season.

Goodell upheld the suspension in July, saying Brady colluded with two Patriots ball handlers to deflate balls before New England routed the Indianapolis Colts in January's AFC championship game. The NFL Players Association wants the suspension nullified.

The Patriots then won the Super Bowl.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Fred Jackson's tenure with the Buffalo Bills is over after the veteran running back, respected team leader and fan favorite was released on Monday.

The decision came only as a mild surprise after the Bills acquired LeSean McCoy in a trade this offseason. But Jackson's release was significant nonetheless because of the blue-collar style and perseverance he displayed during his nine seasons in Buffalo.

General manager Doug Whaley called it a ''difficult decision'' in a statement released by the team.

Aside from McCoy, the Bills' depth chart at running back includes Boobie Dixon, Bryce Brown and hard-hitting rookie fifth-round draft pick, Karlos Williams.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Kirk Cousins will start the season as Washington's quarterback, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Monday.

With Robert Griffin III still in the NFL's concussion protocol program, Gruden opted for Cousins, who was drafted along with Griffin in 2012 and has started nine games when Griffin has been hurt, going 2-7.

Gruden says ''Kirk's taken a giant leap so far'' in the offseason and training camp.

Gruden also says the team still believes in Griffin, who has been plagued by injuries since being the 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year and leading the Redskins to the NFC East title.

Cousins will sit out the preseason finale Thursday against Jacksonville, with Colt McCoy playing the entire game.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

LOS ANGELES (AP) - UCLA starting cornerback Ishmael Adams has been arrested on suspicion of felony robbery after allegedly taking a phone from an Uber driver early Sunday morning.

UCLA's media relations office confirmed Adams' arrest Monday while the 13th-ranked Bruins were beginning preparations for their season opener Saturday against Virginia at the Rose Bowl.

Adams allegedly used force to take the phone, according to Tod Tamberg, the assistant director of UCLA's media relations and public outreach office.

The 21-year-old Adams is being held on $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

Adams started all 26 games for the Bruins over the previous two seasons, returning two interceptions for touchdowns last year. He was the only UCLA player on either side of the ball to be named to the All-Pac-12 first team in 2014.

The redshirt junior from Woodland Hills, California, also returns kickoffs and punts for UCLA, making a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last season against Arizona State.

BASEBALL

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The San Francisco Giants have acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza in a trade with the Boston Red Sox.

De Aza is batting .261 with seven homers and 32 RBIs in 90 games this season, splitting time with Baltimore and Boston. The Red Sox acquired the 31-year-old De Aza in a June 3 trade with the Orioles.

The Giants announced the deal Monday night. The Red Sox received minor league left-hander Luis Ysla in the trade.

San Francisco is looking for help in the outfield while Hunter Pence recovers from a left oblique strain. It got Marlon Byrd in a trade with Cincinnati on Aug. 20.

Because the deal was made before Sept. 1, De Aza will be eligible for the postseason if the Giants get that far.

NBA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Vlade Divac has added the title of general manager of the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings announced Monday that Divac will serve as vice president of basketball operations and general manager. Divac was hired in March as vice president of basketball and franchise operations.

The Kings also announced that Mike Bratz will be assistant general manager, Roland Beech will serve as vice president of basketball strategy and Peja Stojakovic will be director of player personnel and development.

WNBA

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Fever have signed point guard Briann January to a contract extension.

January was Indiana's first-round draft pick in 2009 and has spent all seven seasons with the Fever. She's been part of six playoff teams, the 2012 WNBA title team and is averaging 8.0 points and 3.4 assists this season for a team in position to again make the playoffs.

The Arizona State alum is second in franchise history in career assists (673), was an All-Star last season and has been selected to the league's last three all-defensive teams.
