SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The San Francisco 49ers' quarterback controversy may be over.

J.T. O'Sullivan took a clear lead in the three-man quarterback competition by throwing for 154 yards and a touchdown as the 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers, 34-6, on Saturday.

The six-year journeyman signal caller entered the preseason and - and this game - even with along with career backup Shaun Hill and last years starter, former No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith.

O'Sullivan threw an interception early in the first quarter before leading San Francisco to two first-half scores including a 15-play, 87-yard yard drive that culminated in DeShaun Foster's 1-yard touchdown plunge.

O'Sullivan, who played under 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz in Detroit last season, finished his impressive half of play by connecting with rookie standout receiver Josh Morgan on a 59-yard touchdown bomb.

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who became the Packers starter after future Hall of Famer Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets, played the entire first half and completed 9-of-16 passes for 58 yards.

Rodgers, who played quarterback at the University of California, was passed on by San Francisco in favor of Smith before being selected by the Packers with the 24th pick in the 2005 draft.

Ironically, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy who was the Niners' offensive coordinator at the time, was involved in the decision to draft Smith over Rodgers.

Smith played the most of the second half but looked sloppy, completing 5-of-12 passes for 62 yards.
