KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Kolby Smith rushed for two first-quarter touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs rebounded to finish their preseason on a strong note with a 21-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night.
Smith reached the end zone on runs of 14 and four yards, respectively, for the Chiefs, who built a 14-3 lead entering the second quarter in front of a sold-out crowd that braved a heavy thunderstorm, which delayed the annual Governor's Cup contest by an hour and a half.
Finishing the day with six carries for 38 yards, Smith totaled 85 yards on 14 preseason carries for Kansas City, which added to its lead with an 11-yard touchdown strike from Damon Huard to Bobby Sippio early in the second quarter.
After one period, Huard replaced starter Brodie Croyle, who directed two scoring drives, completing 3-of-4 passes for 42 yards to end preseason competition 28-of-48 for 272 yards.
The Rams scored first on a 35-yard field goal by Josh Brown after the Chiefs fumbled the opening kickoff.
Brock Berlin led St. Louis to a pair of scores, hitting Dane Looker for a 20-yard touchdown just before halftime, cutting Kansas City's lead to 21-10. The Rams added another touchdown on a 2-yard run by Lance Ball early in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.
Most of the starting offensive players did not play in the game for St. Louis, including quarterback Marc Bulger, running back Steven Jackson and wide receiver Torry Holt. Kansas City starting running back Larry Johnson also sat out.
