Romo hopes to play against Rams

Dallas (4-2) at St. Louis (1-4), 1:00 pm EDT

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Cowboys lost more than just the game last week.

The high-powered Cowboys likely will be without star quarterback Tony Romo when they visit the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Romo is expected to miss four weeks with a broken pinkie finger on his throwing hand, an injury that he suffered during last Sunday's 30-24 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

However, Romo returned to practice in limited fashion Thursday in hopes that he could play this week.

"He threw the ball pretty well," coach Wade Phillips said. "I'm not going to count him out as far as the game is concerned, but Brad (Johnson) took most of the snaps."

The 28-year-old Romo has passed for 1,689 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns this season for the Cowboys (4-2), who have lost two of their last three games.

If Romo is unable to go, Brad Johnson would get the start. A 17-year veteran, Johnson has not started a game since 2006 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Romo threw for 321 yards and three scores and Nick Folk kicked a game-tying 52-yard field goal as time expired in regulation last Sunday.

After Dallas won the overtime coin toss but failed to get a first down, Arizona's Sean Morey burst through the line untouched and blocked Mat McBriar's punt.

The loose ball was recovered at the 3-yard line by Monty Beisel, who easily stepped into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. It marked the first time in NFL history that an overtime game ended on a blocked punt for a touchdown.

For the first time this season, the Rams finally built some momentum last week with new head coach Jim Haslett, who took over for Scott Linehan after he was fired on September 29 prior to the bye week.

Josh Brown kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired last Sunday to lift the Rams to a 19-17 victory over the Washington Redskins. Brown also kicked field goals of 51, 25 and 44 yards to give the Rams their first victory of the season.

"You've got to allow the oportunity to come, live in the moment, and kick the ball," said Brown, who has seven game-winning field goals in the final minute or overtime during his six-year career. "Nothing else matters but that two-second moment."
