Redskins release RB Alexander

Nov 25, 2008 - 11:56 PM ASHBURN, Virginia (Ticker) -- The Washington Redskins on Tuesday released running back Shaun Alexander and re-signed defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti.

The Redskins signed Alexander as insurance, with Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts often unable to practice due to injuries. But the former league MVP's tenure with the Redskins lasted less than six weeks.

Alexander agreed to terms with the Redskins on October 14, two days after Betts sprained his knee.

Alexander's career spiraled downward following his brilliant 2005 MVP season in which he rushed for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns with the Seattle Seahawks. It was his fifth straight 1,000-yard campaign.

However, injuries limiting his production in the next two years, and the Seahawks released him following last season.

Alexander had only 11 carries for 24 yards in four games with the Redskins.

A first-round pick of Seattle in 2000, Alexander, 31, had 100 career rushing touchdowns, including at least 14 in five consecutive seasons.

Boschetti began his NFL career with the Redskins in 2004, when he signed as an undrafted free agent.

He played in 19 games for Washington from 2004-2007, starting two, but was released on August 30.
