Ducks take down Avalanche
Nov 3, 2014 - 4:21 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Perry netted his NHL-leading 11th goal of the season and the Anaheim Ducks held off the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Sunday night.Colorado led 2-1 heading into the second period, when Cam Fowler and Hampus Lindholm notched goals. Jason LaBarbera stopped five of his 16 shots in the third to preserve the win for Anaheim, which has won three of its last four games.
LaBarbera, recalled from AHL Norfolk earlier in the day, started in net for the Ducks after a sudden lower-body injury to John Gibson during warmups left them in a pickle.
"I jumped on the plane just expecting to back up tonight. I guess it's better not to have to think about it," LaBarbera said. "I have not played a game in the NHL in over a year, so this was great."
Because their other goaltender, Frederik Andersen, is day-to-day with a leg injury, the Ducks turned to goaltending consultant Dwayne Roloson as their backup in an emergency substitution allowed under NHL rules.
Roloson, 45, played 14 NHL seasons for six different teams, last taking the ice for Tampa Bay during the 2011-12 season.
Ryan Getzlaff dished out two assists in the triumph.
Nathan MacKinnon and Dennis Everberg tallied for the Avalanche, who have dropped four of their last five games. Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves in defeat.
"We were just not sustaining any pressure," Colorado center John Mitchell said.
The Ducks went ahead in the second after outshooting Colorado 12-2.
Patrick Maroon sent a pass from behind the net into the slot for Lindholm, who wristed it home to tie the game at 6:04. Less than two minutes later, Fowler's backhander put the Ducks in front.
Everberg and MacKinnon sandwiched their goals around Perry's marker.
Everberg opened the scoring with a sharp angle wrister from the left side that got past LaBarbera just 2:18 into the game.
Perry's goal came when he drove to the net and ripped a shot that ricocheted off Varlamov, bounced off Perry and went into the net.
MacKinnon's wrister from the right circle with less than a minute left gave Colorado its 2-1 advantage.
Game Notes
Varlamov played in his third game in four nights and has now faced 73 short- handed shots without allowing a goal ... Everberg posted his first career point ... Lindholm scored for the first time in 20 games.
