Hurricanes edge Jackets

Mar 16, 2015 - 2:39 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Brad Malone notched the game-winner in the second period as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2, on Sunday.

Justin Faulk and Ron Hainsey also scored, while Andrej Nestrasil had two assists for the Hurricanes, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Anton Khudobin turned aside 22 shots in the win.

Scott Hartnell and Nick Foligno each had a goal for the Blue Jackets, who had a three-game winning streak broken. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed all three goals on 27 shots.

Columbus scored on the power play with just 0.6 seconds showing on the first period clock as Foligno was able to swipe in his own rebound for his 25th of the season.

The Hurricanes tied the game 8:11 into the second on the power play as Faulk's one-timer from the high slot went in, and the team took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes later as Hainsey's big blast from the left point went through a screen.

"He's got the shot that's a weapon," Carolina coach Bill Peters said of Faulk.

The Blue Jackets tied the game with 7:33 to play in the second as Marko Dano skated down the right wing and went inside-out to get around a defender before sliding a pass to the left side where Hartnell had an open net.

Carolina got the lead back 1:33 later, though, as Brett Bellemore's shot from the right point was tipped in by Malone for his seventh of the season and a 3-2 lead.

"It was a frustrating period, to say the least. I don't think we're a good enough team to win when it's not 20 guys going," Hartnell said.

Khudobin turned aside all 11 shots he faced in the third to hang on for the win.

Carolina hosts Ottawa on Tuesday ... Columbus plays its next three on the road starting in Edmonton on Wednesday ... Carolina was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Columbus went 1-for-4.
