Schwartz's hat trick guides Blues over Stars

Apr 4, 2015 - 5:38 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaden Schwartz netted his second career hat trick and the St. Louis Blues outlasted the Dallas Stars 7-5 on Friday.

Patrik Berglund scored twice while Zbynek Michalek and Alex Pietrangelo each posted a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won their last two. Brian Elliott stopped 26 shots in the win.

"It was kind of a crazy game," said Schwartz. "We kept working, believing in ourselves. Those are always nice wins to be a part of. That goes a long way for belief and character in the locker room."

The win moves St. Louis to 103 points on the season and tied the team with Nashville for first place in the Central Division. Both have four games to play.

Dallas, on the other hand, saw its slim playoff chances get even slimmer. With 84 points, the team is six back of Los Angeles for the West's final wild card with just four games to play, and two other teams are ahead of the Stars in the standings.

Jamie Benn had two goals and an assist and Tyler Seguin added a goal and two assists for the Stars, who have dropped three of their last four. Kari Lehtonen allowed six goals on 19 shots and Jhonas Enroth stopped the one shot he faced in 5 1/2 minutes of relief.

"We didn't play smart hockey once again. It's the same old story," said Benn. "We're just not playing the right way when you need a lead. You give a good team like that a chance to get back in it, and they're going to get back in it. Obviously, they took it to us there."

Trailing by two goals, the Blues got one back with just 26 seconds to play in the second as Schwartz blew a wrister past the glove of Lehtonen to make it a 5-4 game.

St. Louis tied the game 4:44 into the third when Michalek tipped in a T.J. Oshie feed, and the team took the lead halfway through the third shortly after a power play expired as Pietrangelo's turnaround shot from the slot found the back of the net.

Schwartz capped the hat trick and the win with the net empty inside the final minute of play.

Berglund scored with 2:11 to play in the first to give St. Louis the lead, but Travis Moen scored on a penalty shot with 11 seconds to play in the frame.

Berglund gave St. Louis the lead back 15 seconds into the second, and Schwartz netted his first of the game 17 seconds later for a 3-1 lead.

Dallas, though, scored four straight goals as Benn's first came six seconds after Schwartz's, and Seguin tied the game halfway through the second when his rebound hit off of St. Louis' Kevin Shattenkirk and went in.

Benn gave his team the lead with 5:20 to play in the second after he redirected a pass in, and Antoine Roussel's wraparound from the right side made it a 5-3 game with 4:37 left in the second.

Game Notes

St. Louis plays in Chicago on Sunday ... Dallas plays its next three on the road starting in Nashville on Saturday ... Despite all the goals, neither side scored on the power play as St. Louis was 0-for-3 and Dallas 0-for-4 ... St. Louis has won three straight and six of eight in Dallas.
