Streaking Rangers top Hurricanes in SO

Dec 21, 2014 - 3:38 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Klein tied the score late in the third period and the New York Rangers went on to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night to open a home-and-home set.

Mats Zuccarello scored the only goal in the shootout and Henrik Lundqvist made two stops, including a glove save on Chris Terry's backhand to end the game. A third Hurricanes skater shot wide.

J.T. Miller had a power play goal in regulation for the Rangers, who extended their season-high winning streak to five games and finished off a 4-0 road trip.

Lundqvist made 18 saves, including three in overtime.

Terry and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes, who were coming off a 4-1 win over Toronto on Thursday night, their only victory in the last eight games.

Cam Ward played well in defeat, making 32 saves, plus one in the shooting to give Carolina a chance.

The Hurricanes haven't won back-to-back games since a four-game winning streak Nov. 1-7.

Ward subdued the Rangers for much of the game, but Klein tied the score with 2:23 remaining in regulation when he beat the Carolina goaltender with a shot from above the left circle.

"It's not an easy league to come back in, but I thought we kept playing," said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault.

New York has won 13 of the last 14 meetings with the Hurricanes, including a 2-1 shootout victory at home on Oct. 16. The Rangers will have a chance to make it 14 of 15 on Sunday in New York.

"It is what it is," said Ward. "We have to be much better (up there)."

Carolina scored 7:20 into the game after an errant Rangers pass in the New York zone led to a 2-on-1 rush the other way. Nathan Gerbe fed Terry in the slot for a one-timer and the 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second period, the Rangers tied it 4:01 into the third when Mats Zuccarello slipped a pass through the middle to Miller, who was behind the defense and beat Ward with a deke to his forehand in front of the crease.

But the Hurricanes restored their lead just 26 seconds later when Skinner slid a backhand under Lundqvist's pads from the low right side to make it 2-1.

A Rangers goal was waived off with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the third period because Derick Brassard made contact with Ward in the crease.
