Final
Halak, Islanders top Oilers
Feb 11, 2015 - 4:10 AM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves to help the New York Islanders top the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2.Colin McDonald had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who have won two straight. Josh Bailey and Casey Cizikas also tallied goals, and Thomas Hickey had a pair of assists.
Ryan Hamilton scored his first NHL goal, and Anton Lander also lit the lamp for the Oilers, who fell to 1-2-0 on their six-game road trip.
Viktor Fasth allowed three goals on 28 shots.
Halak was under siege for most of the third period, and after a key save in the final minutes, the Islanders went the other way in transition. McDonald slipped, but he made a pass from on the ice to Cizikas in the slot. He settled the puck down and whipped it by Fasth for the game-winner.
"Not everybody had their game tonight, but we found a way to win," said New York coach Jack Capuano.
The Oilers struck first on their first power play opportunity. Nail Yakupov fired a puck from the circle, and Hamilton deflected it in front of the net for his first career NHL goal.
"It's definitely a good feeling," said Hamilton. "It happened so quick."
New York could not answer on a power play shortly after Edmonton's goal, but it did not take much longer to cash in at full strength. The Islanders' fourth line was buzzing, and after Fasth made a pad save on Matt Martin's shot from the slot, McDonald tucked the puck in from the side of the net.
The Islanders took the lead past the midpoint of the second period. Hickey ripped a shot from the point, and the puck glanced off Bailey's stick on its way to the back of the net.
Edmonton scored again on the power play late in the second period. Lander found a soft spot in the defense, and Jordan Eberle set him up for a wrist shot that beat Halak over his shoulder.
