Devils beat Wild, snap four-game skid
Nov 12, 2014 - 5:18 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri scored the eventual game- winning goal midway through the second period and the New Jersey Devils snapped their losing steak with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild.Tuomo Ruutu also potted a goal for the Devils, who ended a four-game skid despite going 0-for-6 on the power play prior to Travis Zajac's empty-netter on a 5-on-4 situation.
Cory Schneider picked up the win with a 23-save performance, including several acrobatic denials in the closing minutes.
Ryan Carter scored a short-handed goal and Darcy Kuemper made 20 saves in Minnesota's fourth straight setback.
"We have to dig deep here. It's as simple as that," Wild head coach Mike Yeo said. "We're the only ones that are going to get ourselves out of this."
Ruutu tipped in Seth Helgeson's point shot 5:42 into the second period and Cammalleri snapped in a rebound for his sixth goal of the season just over four minutes later.
Schneider made a sprawling save on a Nate Prosser shot late in the middle period, but the netminder committed a costly turnover early in the third.
Carter picked off Schneider's clearing attempt at the boards and caught him out of position with a quick shot. Schneider made a pad save, but inadvertently directed it into the back of the net at the 5:24 mark.
The mistake was an afterthought after Schneider stuffed two Wild players on the doorstep down the stretch. After doing the splits to make a save on Erik Haula, Schneider closed his five-hole and secured a Kyle Brodziak redirection.
"The team needed it," said Schneider, who had given up 12 goals the previous four games. "That's the way they need me to play all the time. It was good to come up with some big [saves]."
Zajac provided the sealing goal in the final minute.
