Varlamov, Avalanche blank Preds

Jan 31, 2015 - 4:55 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Semyon Varlamov posted 23 saves for his fourth shutout of the season to lead the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on Friday.

Maxime Talbot, Gabriel Landeskog and Jarome Iginla scored for the Avalanche, who had lost three of four coming into the game.

"To get a shutout in this league is sure not easy," said Varlamov. "Tonight we played a solid 60 minutes. I saw a lot of shots that came from the blue line. We got off to a good start, and we built confidence from there."

Colorado avenged a loss to Nashville in its last game on Tuesday. It wasn't a home-and-home series because the Predators played in St. Louis on Thursday.

Marek Mazanec made 25 saves for the Predators, who have dropped four of their last five.

"We had our opportunities tonight," said Mazanec. "It was good to get the start, but it would have been better to get the win."

Colorado scored the only goal it needed 13:49 in as Nathan MacKinnon got a couple of shots off from the right side of the net that Mazanec stopped, but Talbot was there to put home the rebound for his fourth of the season.

The Avalanche made it a 2-0 game at 5:54 of the third period as Matt Duchene sent a backhand pass from the low right side to the front where Iginla sneaked in and slipped a low one-timer into the net.

Varlamov polished off his 17th career shutout with eight saves in the third period and Landeskog added an empty-netter with 1:11 to play.
