Zidlicky scores in OT as Wings down Rangers
Mar 5, 2015 - 5:49 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Marek Zidlicky scored 1:09 into overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers on Wednesday.Acquired by the Red Wings from New Jersey at the trade deadline, Zidlicky paid dividends with a power-play goal in the extra session.
Henrik Zetterberg, who returned from a four-game absence due to injury, sent a short pass from the right circle to the front of the net for Pavel Datsyuk, who turned around and tried to jam the puck in.
Cam Talbot made the stop, but the puck sat in the slot and Zidlicky was able to take a swipe at it, with the puck bouncing over Talbot and in for the victory.
"I just saw the puck there and I tried to hit the puck and I hit probably this back and in," said Zidlicky. "Couldn't be a better feeling. You know, it was first game. It couldn't be better feeling, and to score, especially in overtime."
Justin Abdelkader scored the other goal while Jimmy Howard made 39 saves for the Red Wings, who have won three straight.
Dan Girardi scored the only goal of the game for the Rangers, who had won five of six coming in. Talbot made 29 stops.
"The story for me was out not burying our chances," said New York defenseman Dan Boyle, who played in his 1,000th NHL game. "We missed a lot of opportunities, especially in that second period. We had good looks and unfortunately we couldn't find the back of the net."
Detroit scored 6:12 in as Abdelkader was able to knock in a Zetterberg pass from in front for his 14th of the season.
The Rangers tied the game on the power play with 2:58 to play in the first as Girardi was able to push in a rebound for his third of the season.
From there the two goaltenders stood tall, with Talbot stopping 19 shots over the next two periods and Howard turning away 29 during the same time.
