Devils continue slide with loss in Detroit
Nov 8, 2014 - 6:17 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Howard stopped 15 shots and Detroit scored four consecutive times to record a 4-2 victory over New Jersey on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena.Jakub Kindl, Brendan Smith, Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall posted one score apiece for the Red Wings, who began a four-game homestand by erasing a three- game losing streak.
Steve Bernier and Jordin Tootoo tallied a goal each for the Devils, who have lost three in a row and seven of 10 since beginning the season with three straight wins.
Cory Schneider was pulled for the second straight contest, this time after giving up four goals on 24 shots in two periods. Keith Kinkaid stopped all seven shots he faced for the rest of regulation.
"I have a lot of concerns from our game tonight," said New Jersey head coach Peter DeBoer. "I think the score is flattering because they were a much better team tonight."
Bernier opened the scoring with 3:18 elapsed by sweeping home a rebound atop the crease, but Detroit struck back with two in a span of 33 seconds late in the period.
Kindl's blast from the point through a Darren Helm screen on a power play with 1:05 remaining drew the hosts even, then Smith put the Wings ahead at 19:28 on a wrister from just below the circles.
"When our power play gets going the whole team gets going," said Smith. "I don't know what our stats are like when we score on the power play, but I feel like we win a lot more when we get some of those goals."
The hosts moved ahead by a 3-1 count when Franzen beat Schneider on a shot inside the right post from the circle with 8:19 remaining in the second on a power play.
Kronwall's long shot hit the end boards, caromed into the net after deflecting off Schneider's pad with 2:21 remaining and the Wings led 4-1 after two.
Tootoo's first with New Jersey came with 2:26 played in the third.
